Can I peer-to-peer/mesh network the MetaWear devices? Is firmware required to do so?

Without using a smartphone connected to every device -- just to a few of them.

    Most devices can maintain multiple BTLE connections so you can have several MetaWears communicate to each other through 1 mobile device.

    As I mentioned in my original post, there will not be smart phones connected to every device.In some scenarios, there may not be any smart phones at all.

    Can the devices communicate to each other directly?

    No, metawear boards cannot communicate directly with each other.
