ADC input modes

according to the NRF app note ADC_config.pdf the adc has 3 different input scaling modes 1/1, 2/3, and 1/3; for example 2/3 gives an analog range of 1.8V when the Vref is 1.2V. how are these settings acessed by the API or metawear app ?

an no backdoor to directly write the registers ?
or are these overridden when the adc module is initiated ?
