Metawear proximity detector

I'm trying to create a wearable that logs the UUID from an iBeacon and turns on an LED when it's within 5-10 feet from it.  I can't find any information on how to set a metawear device up as an iBeacon receiver though.  Does anyone have any experience doing this?  Is it even possible?  I'm surprised there aren't any projects around using iBeacon technology to cause devices (not a smartphone) to react to each other when they are nearby.

    The MetaWear can transmit IBeacon ad packets but that is it.  Any communication between boards must be done through a mobile device.
