Battery percentage explanation?

Hello -

I'm curious about exactly how the battery voltage is read and the percentage is calculated. Is it read via a linear ADC? The data sheets aren't clear on this matter. I ask because battery discharge definitely isn't linear, so if the returned percentage is literally (converter count/maximum converter count), it seems like it wouldn't be a very accurate reflection of the actual battery status UNLESS the top and bottom voltage references for the converter are nominal supply voltage and minimum supply voltage, respectively. In that case, the percentage would be a reasonably accurate reflection of the battery charge.
